Products I Swear By as a Vet Tech Cat Mom : Cat Collars

Back in the day, cats rarely wore collars. Not only that, collars for cats and dogs were often made of straw bale twine, cotton & nylon rope made for outdoor projects, human’s belts, and different kinds and sizes of industrial linked chains. (this may have been more true for more rural states, like the one in which i grew up)

In the 21st century, the progress and development of pet products has been dramatic and amazing to see. In 2006, i worked at a local pet shop (RIP local businesses) and we had three types of pet collars; Belt Buckle, Harness, and Snap. There were no collars made just for cats. For cats, you would get the extra small collar, for puppies or cats. Blog Post Run Down on Collar Styles

It was discovered that some pets would get themselves caught in trees, fences, etc.; and i guess i shouldn’t sugar coat it; would die from strangulation.

Dog owner Tenney Mudge invented the KeepSafe Break-Away Safety Collar after the tragic death of her beloved Samoyed/Australian Shepherd named Chinook, who she lost to a collar strangulation accident. ... The safety buckle is designed so that it will release, the collar will fall off, and the dog will be free of the hazard.

As we cat parents know, cats are a little more wild & at a higher risk for injury. They get into more dangerous shenanigans as they explore their environment vertically and can fit themselves into tiny spaces. Heh, the original par-core.

Break Away Collars

Break-Away Collars are the most readily available cat collars. They are often considered the most recommended collar for cats. It is never recommended to put a regular collar on your cat. The break-away collar snaps together like any collar, and when enough force is applied, the collar snaps open.

There is one downside to the break-away collar. If you get one of poor quality, or have cats that like to rough-and-tumble, you will be losing that collar. This is a problem if your cats are outdoor, indoor/outdoor, or accidentally escape & go missing. This has happened to me—each collar, with tags, missing = $$$

Whatever collar you choose, make sure that

  • it is not a regular type of collar that one would put on a dog

  • you can fit two fingers between the collar and your pet’s neck

  • there is some form of identification on your pets collar

AND MAKE SURE YOUR PET IS MICROCHIPPED AND THAT THE MICROCHIP INFORMATION IS UP TO DATE!!

LOVE, ASH
